Welcome from the Principal

Welcome to Waitākiri Primary School.30-CHP-school-115

Waitākiri School was created in 2014 following the merger of Burwood and Windsor Schools and begins as a new school with a combined history of 184 years at the time of the merger.

Burwood School had a very long and proud history in the east having been established in 1872, just 22 years after the First Four Ships arrived in Canterbury. Windsor School was opened in 1970, just under 100 years later, due to the rapid population growth in the area and the demand on local schools including Burwood. Waitākiri School has been established by honouring the past to lay a positive foundation for the future.

Our goal at Waitākiri School is to develop REAL Heroes making REAL CHOICESRespectful, Encouraging, Achieving, Lifelong Learners. Our aim is to continuously improve learning outcomes, hauora (well-being) and self regulation through quality teaching and meaningful learning experiences. Our children will progressively have the opportunity to lead their learning and make CHOICES as they are encouraged and supported to be self regulated learners.

CHOICES are central to who we are as a school:
                                               Community focused
           Developing positive Hauora
Providing children with  Opportunities to lead their learning
                       Encouraging  Innovation
Teaching and learning Collaboratively and developing creativity
Making school a place of  Enjoyment
Learning and playing in a Sustainable way

You can expect to see children learning with a range of staff in flexible learning spaces designed to maximize teacher collaboration, student self-regulation and student centered learning. Our curriculum is a place based curriculum linked to our Kaupapa, our story and history. Children will learn about their world and learn through meaningful contexts and engaging learning experiences. We value achievement and will challenge and support each and every child to achieve to their fullest potential. To ensure success for your child our focus is quality teaching (effective pedagogy), student centered learning, teacher collaboration, effective use of space and all resources, and collaborative teaching (see the image below). Together we can and will achieve great things with your child.

2016 affirmed a lot for our school. We settled into our purpose built spaces, teachers and tamariki had the opportunity to teach and learn collaboratively and we saw immense progress. Our well-being and achievement data evidences we have made significant gains. We are very close to achieving our strategic goal of 95% of all Year 6 students leaving at or above the standard (currently 93%!) and well-being continues to improve. The Educational Review Office reviewed our school with the school receiving the best possible review with a subsequent 4-5 year next review (the best available) You can see our review here. The great news is our school continues to go from strength to strength, winning awards for sports, chess, jump jam, the arts, enviro-schools, acknowledged in by the Ministry of Education and mentioned in parliament! Additionally, the school receives over a thousand visitors each year to view the practice occurring and is part of a number of teacher and University led research initiatives (University of Canterbury- Co-teaching, University of Victoria- Singing).

Waitākiri School is a fantastic place to learn, to work and to be part of. We look forward to meeting you!
